History

Villa Rufolo is the most symbolic monument of Ravello and one of the most enchanting places on the Amalfi Coast, where history, art, and nature blend into a unique experience.

The palace was built between the 12th and 13th centuries by the powerful Rufolo family, key figures in the economic and political life of medieval Ravello. It stood as a symbol of the prestige and wealth of the family itself. Its architecture, combining Arab, Byzantine, and local influences, still bears witness today to the melting pot of cultures that made the Maritime Republic of Amalfi so great.

The villa's fame endured through the centuries and even captivated Giovanni Boccaccio, who mentioned the Rufolo family in the Decameron and described a magnificent palace with courtyards, loggias, and marvelous gardens, identified by many scholars as this extraordinary residence.

After the decline of the family, the villa experienced a period of neglect until, in the mid-19th century, the Scottish philanthropist Francis Nevile Reid purchased it and restored it to its former glory. Passionate about botany and art, Reid renovated the buildings and transformed the gardens into a true landscape masterpiece.

It was here, on May 26 1880, that Richard Wagner found his vision of the Parsifal materialized, exclaiming: “Klingsor's magic garden has been found.” Since then, Villa Rufolo has become a legendary place for visitors from all over the World.

The renowned “Garden of the Soul”, with its vibrant colors, Mediterranean and exotic plants, and breathtaking sea views, has hosted the ''Ravello Festival'' every summer for the past 74 years, one of Italy's oldest music festivals, which has welcomed some of the world's most prestigious orchestras and celebrated conductors, including Riccardo Muti, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, and Daniele Gatti.

Thanks to the management of the Fondazione Ravello, the monumental complex and its gardens have been enhanced through major restoration projects.
