History

Villa del Grumello, overlooking the first basin of Lake Como just a few steps from the city center, is an elegant 17th-century residence set in a historic park of four hectares, boasting rare naturalistic and landscape value. A place that intertwines architectural charm and the richness of its botanical heritage, it has been home to several illustrious noble families over the centuries, such as the Odescalchi, the Giovio, and in the 19th century, the Celesia. The villa has hosted notable figures such as Vincenzo Monti, Alessandro Volta, and Ugo Foscolo.

Today, thanks to the restoration and enhancement efforts initiated in 2006 by the Villa del Grumello Association, the complex has become a dynamic cultural hub that opens up to the city, botanical enthusiasts, and international tourists, forming the heart of the landscape and cultural path of the Kilometer of Knowledge.

The Grumello Park, designed in the Romantic style, is characterized by a great botanical variety and the presence of valuable century-old trees, including camphor trees, fragrant oleas, sequoias, and an impressive Ginkgo biloba. The garden is further enriched by a collection of rare hydrangeas and offers blooms that follow the seasons. The slow walk through the Park is enhanced by the garden dedicated to Pliny the Elder, which underscores the connection between nature and knowledge, as well as the new Butterfly Path.

The Villa's spaces and the historic 19th-century greenhouse provide an ideal venue for cultural events, business meetings, workshops, and training initiatives. Together with the park—with its captivating atmosphere—they offer an ideal setting for photo shoots, film productions, artistic events, and exclusive receptions.

Villa del Grumello is now a place of encounter between culture, education, innovation, and creativity. It enhances the territory, its beauty, and local practices with a global outlook.
The rich program of public events intertwines with the very essence of the place, with its marginal stance suspended between the city and the “wilderness,” offering an experience of culture and art immersed in the beauty of the landscape. Among the most prominent events are: “Humanities Festival. Socio-environmental Festival”, “Villa del Grumello. Cinema”, “Villa del Grumello Jazz Festival”, and “Villa del Grumello. Teatro Danza. Ecotonalità. Postures for Coexisting”.
