History

The Landscaped Park Lauretum, officially born in 2021, is a complex of gardens, arboretums, orchards, and olive groves which extends over about three hectares of land beside the historical center of Loreto Aprutino.
Born after a long iter of unification of properties and after difficult activities, landscape renovation over areas strongly degraded, the park Lauretum is rich in panoramic views of Loreto. Inside the park, a lot of arboreal and shrubby species, both natives and coming from other continents, are preserved, and it appears to be a great botanic garden immersed in the historical landscape of the village.

The renovation project has been developed from 1998 till 2021. The sites of the landscaped park are independent, separated by hedges and trees, perfectly connected with each other thanks to trails leading to the most important parts and the views. The main entrance in via Pretara, through the charming historical avenue of trees belonging to the “Giardino dei ligustri”. A part of the trail proceeds until the ancient “Great Fountain”, one of the most important places in Loreto, and then goes up to the historic center through the Porta Palamolla. Another trail leads to Via Pretara, up to Santa Maria in Piano, a church of great historical value with precious frescos of the XIV and XV century inside.

The first lot, “Giardino dei Ligustri”, was renovated and officially opened to the public in 2017 and has been included in the property of the park. The gardern is characterized by an important botanic collection and the garden comes to life from an important redevelopment and reconstruction work of the Liberty Garden dating back to the earlier twentieth century. Later, from 2019 to 2021, other areas have been added to the park, among them the Arboretum, with native and exotic trees and bushes, and then two panoramic plots of land with historical olive trees. Exactly in this area some gardens with officinal species and plants of Mediterranean scrub are under construction.

In 2021 some historical specimens of Laurus nobilis still existing in the property have been recovered and valued. These are located near Loreto historical center and are part of a reconstruction project of the ancient forest called Lauretum. The tree called Laurus is exactly the symbol of Loreto Aprutino and the realization of the forest will have as a target primarily educational objectives and the recovery of the historical landscape.

The park is private but opened to the public and accessible by students for didactic activities and environmental education. The park also hosts the CEA “Giardino dei Ligustri” (Environmental Education Centre), approved by the Regione Abruzzo in 2017. This center performs educational activities with schools of every order and degree concerning the environment and garden art.
