Curiosity

The camellia has a great peculiarity: if the petals fall off, they do so accompanied by the calyx of the flower. This is why in Chinese culture it represents the perfect union and devotion between two lovers.
In the language of flowers, the camellia represents esteem, admiration and perfect, unexhibited beauty, as well as being able to cope with sacrifices and life, a meaning due to the consistency of the flower, which does not lose its petals.

The white camellia symbolises feelings of esteem, gratitude and admiration, the pink camellia symbolises the desire to have the person to whom it is given closer, and the red camellia symbolises love and hope.

COMPO's advice

The camellia is a plant suitable for living in pots and reaches a maximum height of 2 metres. It prefers a shady exposure and must be protected from direct sunlight, except in winter and in the morning and evening hours. The air must not be excessively dry.

Repotting is advisable after about 2-3 years. When doing so, COMPO recommends using COMPO SANAŽ Potting soil for Azaleas and Rhododendrons, which is ideal for all acidophilic plants in general, due to its composition with a very low pH, and rich in well-harmonised nutrients.

The soil should be kept neither too dry nor too wet. In the latter case the risk is the proliferation of pathogens that would lead to the death of the plant. COMPO advises that stagnant, softened water should be preferred for watering: tap water tends to be too cold and could jeopardise the survival of the camellia roots and the plant would suddenly lose its leaves. From the appearance of the buds (around the end of July), watering should be reduced and then carried out very sparingly.

When flowering is reached COMPO recommends fertilising 1-2 times a week, with a special acidifying liquid fertiliser such as COMPO Fertiliser for Azaleas, Rhododendrons and Camellias: a specific mineral fertiliser, enriched with iron, which maintains the acidity level in the soil and ensures abundant flowering and bright green leaves. After bud development, fertilisation can be suspended until the following spring.

Finally, if you have a large number of camellias, it may be more practical to use COMPO Granular Fertiliser for Rhododendrons with Guano: an excellent special fertiliser with excellent organic and mineral nutrients. Its very rich formula, thanks to the guano content, ensures lush growth with abundant blooms.

Finally, to give the camellia a new shape, the suckers can be pruned carefully, but without cutting off the old branches
